Investing in our youth is not negotiable. They are our future leaders and LOK’s leadership saw a need to keep our young talent in our state. YLOK was created to entice our youth to stay in or return to Oklahoma. In the summer of 2001, LOK expanded its focus by building a program that would accomplish this goal, and YLOK was formed. Fifty-two rising high school seniors take a weeklong educational journey across Oklahoma, learning lessons about leadership, trust, problem solving, communication, cooperation, career opportunities, but most importantly, why Oklahoma is such a great place to live and work. To keep highly caliber people in Oklahoma, you must evoke an emotional attachment to it; a sense of loyalty, inclusion, responsibility and accountability. If they are a valued part of the solution, then you must provide a reason to stay.
YLOK emulates the adult program establishing leadership opportunities to Oklahoma’s youth; ensuring a deeper understanding of the critical issues and to strengthen our efforts to retain Oklahoma’s most valuable asset; its youth. LOK funds the YLOK program through the support of it donors, sponsors and friends and the students selected attend a week long educational experience at no charge to them. YLOK plants the seed of effective leadership and service to communities, large and small, preparing the youth of today to be engaged citizens determined to be a part of the solution and a catalyst for positive change.
